Decent Learners

...(short for “Decentralized Learners”) is imagined to be a community of people that approach learning as a world-wide, life-long process. As opposed to limiting education to a classroom setting, a decent learner will see all aspects of life as a medium for personal growth and skill development.

Allegiance

Learning is most robust when we identify our core allegiance. I personally pledge allegiance to Yahweh - the creator of all that is seen and unseen. This means that my personal commitments are driven by a quest to know Yahweh and his plan for advancing the well-being of entire communities instead of a desire for academic achievements and monetary gain.
What do you pledge allegiance to?

Communion

Because I pledge allegiance to Yahweh, I lean heavily on the teachings of Yeshua (or Jesus) for good and proper communion, which is biblically discussed as unified contributive acts through a shared mindset. The outcome is a community of loving participants who regard the needs of others at least as important as their own.
For you, what is community and how is it accomplished?

Autonomy

I deem autonomy as the best disposition for learning and living. This means that personal responsibility is fundamental for honing our talents and rendering the world more habitable than we found it.

Mastery

And finally, I only endorse a mastery approach to education by accepting nothing less than a deep understanding of a given topic or field of knowledge. A robust economy is built on individuals with high levels of expertise, not accolades and high salaries. This demands that we resist the temptation to blindly adhere to traditions and structures that inspire mediocre efforts.

Learning Facilitator

Since 2008, I have labored in the field of education in one way or another. I have served as a science teacher, counselor, paraprofessional, administrator, church youth director and (most importantly) a homeschooling parent to four children. If there were ever moments in life when I was not occupying one or more of these roles, I was volunteering either as a classroom aid or youth sports coach. Additionally, I have extensive training in educational research at the doctoral level and I spend my free time taking on graduate level training in biblical studies. My objective at Decent Learners is to assist families with administering high-quality skill development opportunities to their youth without compromising the personalized nature of learning.

FAQ

What are the objectives of decent learners?

1) Accelerate autodidactic literacy for budding learners, so that by the age of 12, learners are able to learn information autonomously.2) Ensure learners attain full economic and workforce awareness by the age of 15.3) Begin internship, job-shadowing and/or service-learning ventures by the age of 16 to accompany their academic training.4) To implement a holistic educational approach whereby spiritual and career growth are not separate ventures, so that Jesus is revered in every effort.

Is this a Christian organization?

I make a distinction between Christians and "Christian organizations." There is only one legitimate Christian organization - the church. Nonetheless, the community of Decent Learners will be held to the same norms as many other Jesus-seeking communities that exalt the Hebrew Scriptures and the ministry of the Holy Spirit through the body of believers as a united authority. The co-op is open to anyone regardless of their beliefs about the origin and purpose of humanity. Because I personally promote and defend the biblical narrative, however, constituents will be challenged to uphold said norms and their societal implications. If you would like more clarity on this, please reach out to me. Understanding this is vital to peaceful participation in the Decent community.

Is there a cost?

Yes. Each family is to pay a $35/month fee for membership from August through May.

Is my kid too young to start if they turn 5 later in the year?

Nope. I had a late birthday as well (December) and have experienced no deficits in my learning as a result of it. Of course, it's up to you (the parent) when assessing your student's readiness. But all students are welcomed who can reasonably function at each learning level, regardless of age.

Is this everyday?

The curriculum requires daily attention, but we only gather once weekly. This may change depending on the needs of the community and funding.

Is there a drop-off option?

No. All children require at least one parent or guardian to be present during gatherings. The learning facilitator will not be responsible for any children other than his/her own.
