Decent Learners

...(short for “Decentralized Learners”) is imagined to be a community of people that approach learning as a world-wide, life-long process. As opposed to limiting education to a classroom setting, a decent learner will see all aspects of life as a medium for personal growth and skill development.

Allegiance

Allegiance is consistent devotion. This is essential for making steady progress and reaching maturity in any craft, whether it be sports, music, academics, or anything else. Is your family - guardian and student - ready to pledge allegiance to developing academically in a way that will best serve your communities?

Communion

Communion is the sharing of resources - such as intelligence, food, building materials, and so on - to accomplish united ambitions. Intellectual pursuit (or academics) can indeed serve the individual. But within humanity, the greatest purpose of academics is the construction of a commonwealth. Will you prioritize the wellbeing of a community during your personal academic journey?

Autonomy

Much of the academic material taught by school teachers can, and must, be learned autonomously. Holding students accountable to teach themselves enhances metacognition and intrinsic motivation in the domain of learning. This also allows a teacher to assist the student in a much greater capacity, including the promotion of critical thinking and what I call "brink" learning, which involves keeping up with (or even contributing to) the latest research findings. Will your family - guardian and student - commit yourselves to scholastic autonomy?

Mastery

The goal of academic learning is conceptual mastery - a deep understanding of a given topic or field of knowledge. When we focus on A's, scholarships, and other artificial rewards, our intellectual efforts are diminished. A sturdy labor force is built on individuals with high levels of expertise, not accolades and high salaries. Are you daring and caring enough to approach learning with mastery as your goal?

Learning Facilitator

Since 2008, I have labored in the field of education in one way or another. I have served as a science teacher, counselor, paraprofessional, administrator, church youth director and (most importantly) a homeschooling parent to four children. If there were ever moments in life when I was not occupying one or more of these roles, I was volunteering either as a classroom aid or youth sports coach. Additionally, I have extensive training in educational research at the doctoral level and I spend my free time taking on graduate level training in biblical studies. My objective at Decent Learners is to assist families with administering high-quality skill development opportunities to their youth without compromising the personalized nature of learning.
